Hungarian Puli

The Hungarian Puli is a loyal, obedient dog and perhaps the best-known of the Hungarian sheepdogs outside its homeland. It is easily distinguishable by its long, dark, corded coat, which is not so difficult to groom as might be believed

Origin and history

The Puli is better known than other Hungarian sheepdogs, such as the Pumi, the Komondor and the Kuvasz, probably because in its native land it directs the flock by jumping on or over the sheep's backs. It is said to have existed for 1,000 years, being a descendant of the sheepdogs brought to Hungary by the Magyars. It has proved itsell as a fine water retriever and has done well in obedience and police work Hungarian shepherds favour their dark colour, which is easily picked out among the flock.

Hungarian Puli Information

General appearance

A lively, agile, intelligent, undemanding dog of medium size. It has a solid physique, lean and muscular throughout. The outline of the body and limbs is square. Examination of the individual parts of the body IS difficult, because the Puli is completely covered with a thick, long, wavy coat that tends to mat The head gives the impression of being round because of the long hair that comes down over the eyes, concealing the true shape. The shaggy tail, long and curled up about to the loins, makes it seem that the hindquarters slope upward. The precise body lines are hard to follow, as a glance will show; even the individual parts are difficult to see clearly because of the Puli's unique coat.

Colour

Today breeders are producing Pulis that are black or black with reddish or white ticking as well as several varieties of grey.

Head

Small and fine. From the front it appears round, whereas in profile it seems elliptical. The nose is relativey large and is black, like the eye-rims and lips. The bridge is shorter than the skull, its length being 35 per cent that of the head. The lips fit closely over the gums.

The bridge is straight, the muzzle rounded. The jaws are equally developed with strong, regular teeth; and the jaws meet in a scissor bite. The lower canines are set slightly forward of the upper; the other teeth meet precisely. The stop is accentuated. The skull is rounded; the supra-orbitalndges are pronounced.

Tail

Carried over the loin, its hair mingles with the rump hair so that the tail is virtually invisible.
