Wachtelhund

The Wachtelhund is a hardy breed bearing some resemblance to the English Springer Spaniel. It IS little known outside Germany, where it has a sound reputation as a gundog and retriever.

Origin and history

The Germans, when they produced the Wachtelhund, wanted to create a breed that could cope with waters and forest and also flu_h out and retrieve game. The breed was produced by the crossing of a number of small dogs. However, Harrap's Champion Dogs of the World credits the old German Stober with the Wachtelhund's excellent nose.

The Wachtelhund, which is not recognized in either the United Kingdom or the USA, is usually dark brown in colour, and there can be white marks on chest and toes. It can also be white with brown spots, white and brown, or solid white.
